Lord of Mysteries : Episode 1
Current Episode Score: 7
Ok, I’m very interested in this show now. I didn’t know this existed until yesterday, mainly because it isn’t listed as a normal summer show. But coming in completely blind with nothing but a high score to guide me I think might work out this time. I’ve always wanted to watch more of the Chinese stuff, but they never seem to get English subs outside, or at least they don’t show up with English subs in places I normally look.
But from this first episode I am impressed, first by the visuals. The show just straight up looks incredible. Some of the shots of movement are a tad rough and not as smooth as the rest of the show. But largely this is a very impressive show visually, which in a sea of very generic anime that helps push things way up my list. I personally feel like too many shows just don’t try pushing the visuals and technology that is available at all, so when something like this shows up I take interest.
As for what we have seen from the story and the characters, I’m slightly confused but want to learn more. There is obviously a very large amount of world building that needs to be done, and they have tried their best in the first episode to make it work. Though I don’t know if it is perfect. Klein seems like a different style of reincarnation character than I’m used to, immediately testing to see if he can return and picking up on his unique situation very quickly. And there is obviously some odd link with his original world that must have had magic and similar situations. We also appear to have multiple parts working in this world to different goals which we haven’t yet learned about, with no clue how Klein fits into it all. But I’m very much looking forward to more world building in relation to these things.
Some of the rougher stuff I thought about in the episode was an odd pacing. Or at least the very odd jumps between scenes it seemed like. I’m not sure if it was an attempt to fill the episode with as much as possible, or intentional to create a general odd feeling and keep you feeling uncertain. But while I tried to keep track of things, we have moved between multiple different parts and a fairly large amount of jumping into dream realms that make it kinda difficult to figure out what is reality, and what is this dreamscape.
