The Detective Is Already Dead : Episode 1

That was a disappointing 46 minutes, really disappointing. So many things are odd and out of place, that I just can’t get over.

To start with, why Middle School? None of these characters looked like they were in Middle School, or acted like it at all. At minimum half way through High School, but nothing under that. Like Kimihiko living alone? What Middle School kid can live alone? Or take international flights carrying strange cases? If your not gonna have your characters act their age, just change their age. Make them older until their actions and visuals match their age, it is really simple.

The other part of the characters I have issue with outside of age, they feel like amalgamations of various other popular characters. I had to stop and make sure the author didn’t write some other various popular media. They feel like characters I have seen a dozen times, and not in a pleasant good way. This isn’t a compliment that I like them, they feel too close to other better characters that share the exact same traits. Just disappointing in general. And the voice actors don’t help the situation at all.

Next up, the abilities. The Ear Guy I can kinda accept, I mean that was super bloody odd and strange. Came completely out of left field without much warning. But I mean, I’ve seen odder. What bothers me is Siesta and her abilities, which I guess I’ll never learn about given she is bloody dead. But yea, no amount of tech or gadgets can make you run along seat backs and move 20ft in a matter of seconds. She is ether some supernatural being, or an android. And if it isn’t one of those, I don’t accept it at all.

But onto the content of the episode. First the hijacking is sudden, great hook I guess. But after that things get choppy, real choppy. You go from thing happening to solution in a moment, and you never get the explanation for how you get to this point. It gave me a serious case of whiplash how fast things were happening, which is surprising given they had 46 minutes. But it seems instead of doing a good long proper build up for the long episode, they just combined two episodes. You could even essentially see the cut when they combined them. In the “second” episode we have them actually become partners, and solve a full case. Expect we never get a resolution, it gets solved off screen after a really sudden cut. And heck, we never even saw these flying shoes, are those actual things or just something she said? Guess we shall never know.

Something positive I will say, visuals worked well. I liked the way the show looked, though at times the resolution looked really low and was incredibly noticeable. Man what I would give for studios to stop making anime in 720p like it is 2000 and finally start using a proper high resolution artwork, or at least do a better job upscaling it. Otherwise, the battle looked sleek and was a enjoyable to watch. In general, it was fine but not ground breaking.

Man this has turned into a full review hasn’t it. Much longer than I planned. I think I’ll give it the standard 3, specially since I feel like we haven’t actually meet the cast yet. Given that one of the characters we meet is dead, so their must be others coming. And maybe they will be better, and give this show something unique and special, but give what they managed to write this episode I highly doubt it.
