Mars Red : Episode 1

This could easily be my anime of the season, pretty easily. If it keeps the same tone and pacing, and doesn’t ruin it by getting rushed. This first episode just immediately grabbed my attention and held it the entire time, the visual style is unique and interesting, it has good music, and I really want to see what is going on with this story. But like any show that starts this strong for me, it has so many chances to stumble along the way.

Some thing that stood out for me was the pacing, and being comfortable moving away from action or characters. I love when shows are willing to just show a character walking with some unique camera angles, with some casual dialogue explaining things or music to set the mood playing in the background. Too many shows anymore just have cuts between characters talking for 2min that gets super dull and boring very quickly.

Now something it does do that hurt the show, is the cgi crowds. No matter who does it, or what art style it is placed on. I can immediately notice those cgi crowds of characters moving very odd and mechanical, and it always disappoints me. This has been a issue that is on-going for years now, and I don’t understand how the industry hasn’t learned and advanced the technology they are using at all.
