Anime Wrap Up – Winter 2022 & Winter 2012
Well the Winter season of anime is pretty much finished now, so figured I would just give some of my general thoughts about the season of shows that I watched, and of course those of 10yrs ago.
Winter 2022:
Man this was a season of really high or below average for me. There wasn’t really a single show I watched that I thought was above average but not amazing that I could really recommend. Completely skipped the number 7 in my scoring. I have the highs in stuff like Demon Slayer, Dress-Up Darling, Princess Connect, and Vanitas. Stuff that I just fell in love with and immediately jumped on watching the episode and wanted to see were things went. They all had great animation and enjoyable stories and characters, any of them I could easily recommend.
But the opposite side are the shows that were fine, but honestly not all that amazing. That I could see watching, but honestly didn’t do enough to say were great. Reincarnated as a Total Fantasy Knockout(hate the full title way too long), Love of Kill, Slow Loop, Genius Prince. They were fine, but all had various issues that I just had trouble getting over. They were good enough that I enjoyed watching but would never be disappointed if I just didn’t watch an episode quickly. Decent animation, and decent stories, normally the characters were the high point.
Coming up in the bottom for me are Land of Leadale and Bisco. Man nether of these shows worked for me at all. I just could never enjoy the stories or the characters at all. Honestly they are shows I should have just dropped earlier on in the season, probably need to be a bit more aggressive with dropping these style shows in the future.
I think I have enjoyed this season in general would be my thoughts, I watched a lot that I liked and enjoyed it. Though I am kinda worried about the lack of good original shows that are airing each season now. I didn’t find a single original show, not based on a LN or Manga or Game, that I wanted to watch at all. And this continues onto the Spring season as well. While I do like adaptions, they always lack a certain freedom that a truly original show has. And I hope it improves much more in the future, though my hopes are low.
Winter 2012:
Now for the older stuff, jumping in the time machine and going 10 years in the past to watch things I’ve never seen before. And honestly I’m starting to have trouble with this, and just gonna get harder as I go on. Getting closer to when I started watching anime in 2015, so I binged many of the good shows years ago. And just not really doing rewatches for these personal challenges.
Didn’t have any super amazing shows, just two that I kinda enjoyed in; Amagami SS+ and Natsume 4. Both of them are just sequels to shows I’ve enjoyed previously and that just continued again for another season. They are still just as fine as the previous season, that is pretty much my thoughts. Not great but not terrible really.
But quickly it drops to shows I just didn’t like at all; in Black Rock Shooter and Inu X Boku. Honestly the issue with both is the story just isn’t very good, and the pacing feels super odd. By the end of the show I still wasn’t super sure what they were trying to do with the show at all.
Also ended up pausing/dropping two shows; Lagrange and Bodacious Space Pirates. I don’t really know if I will ever go back and actually finish these shows. I didn’t hate what I had seen, but just kinda ran out of time and didn’t love them enough to make time for them. They never grabbed my attention enough, in a good way or in a hating kinda way to keep watching. Maybe I will go back eventually.
