Guilty Crown: Full Review

Oh boy, this show is a mess. A mess of decent idea’s that should work great, and than they just get destroyed by terrible characters and pacing and general story. It is honestly amazing how they managed to turn this from a show I was actually interested in, to whatever we have finished up with.

The biggest issue I have is the pacing, it is terrible. It is one of those shows that makes me wonder what went wrong and where, how? After-all this is an anime original, so going into production they would have to know how many episodes they have to work with and how much time they have to make things work. And yet they messed it up somehow.

You have 2 cours essentially, but instead of doing a single extended story that spans all 22 episodes with a solid story and developing characters and factions and eventually leading to a major final fight. They split it into 2 different parts, and each one had to tell a full and complete story that was just too big for 11 episodes they had. Both parts end up with the same issue, it starts off good and than they run out of time and have to make an ending happen somehow. Who cares if the process of connecting everything together is just forgotten along the way.

It really is disappointing, because to start the show I was decently interested in this and seeing how it developed. They had some good characters, it looked good, the music was great, story wasn’t anything special but I wanted to see it develop and definitely had potential to be something special. And than it fell apart in the end when they needed to finish the cour. And after that, why do I get invested in the 2nd cour and rest of the story? I was already disappointed by the 1st cour and the rushed pacing, so why should I expect anything better from the 2nd. And it really wasn’t any better.

Poor pacing of course also effects the characters in major ways. Most of the characters lacked any sort of arc or progression in them at all. Outside of their feelings about Shuu, they didn’t change at all. But even main characters, like Inori, don’t feel like she developed in any meaningful way across the show. Meanwhile Shuu of course go the most development, and I don’t think it was horrible. It did a decent enough job even with it’s issues to show him change in major ways as events effected the story, just wish they could have given the rest of the characters that same treatment. But you also get characters who you just don’t know anything about despite them appearing and having major roles, they just never properly introduced really.

By the end I really only have 2 things I could say it actually decent. The visuals and the music. The visuals and fights actually look good, they are colorful and exciting to watch. You want to see the big fight happen cause it is entertaining to watch. The big fights are also backed up with the music. Which I do believe is the best thing to come out of the show by far. And given they managed to actually keep doing music outside of the show, and still exist. I guess everyone else would agree they are the best to come from this show.
