In the Land of Leadale : Full Review

Another season and another isekai anime, and yet another one that does nothing with the concept at all. My quick review of this would be generic and uninteresting. Nothing in this show is unique or well done at all, I don’t even think it is all that competently done. Everything has been done better by other shows previously, and many times over at that. The only reason I can’t give this a worse score, is nothing ever offended me or made me want to stop watching.

Starting with story of course, it commits probably the biggest flaw a modern anime can commit…outside of terrible cgi. It brings nothing new to the genre or season at all. It is yet another VRMMO Isekai anime with an utterly forgettable and generic story that you have seen identical story beats happen hundreds of times by this point. Save random villagers, save merchant and hitch a ride, save some knights, defeat some unbeatable monster, meet up with npcs, do random quests. Not a single thing in this show was new or interesting.

And if the generic story wasn’t bad enough, it also never explains it’s world. This is a VRMMO that apparently shut down. But there are also other players who ended in this game, except Cayna never wonders anything about them. She just accepts that apparently all these people have died in real life and ended up in the game, and nobody seems worried or confused about these events at all. These other players also never really fit into the world, they talk about being around for dozens of years but seem to have had no effect to the rest of the world at all. Despite being more powerful than any npc in the show.

As for the characters, what can I really say that I haven’t said already. Generic is the style of the show, and that continues with them. You have a bunch of characters who don’t really have any personality or traits outside of a single defining trait that their entire character is built on. And than Cayna is just dull, she is an overpowered character who never faces any challenges or conflicts. She seems to have no conflicts about killing or her family she left behind or the events that happen in the show. She had no growth over 12 episodes, just like every other character.

Visually this show would be near the bottom of the pile. It just doesn’t look good enough to stand out from the crowd in any way. Fights are boring and not very exciting, character designs are simple, along with a simple world design and color pallet, and some occasional cgi. It just doesn’t do a single thing well enough to make it look good, or even really decent.

To be honest, I don’t even know if a decent story and characters and world exists in the source material of the Light Novel or Manga. I haven’t read them, but I am doubtful. And the anime has done nothing to make me want to seek them out and look for themselves. I’m not left wanting to see more and learn more, and just want to be done with it and forget I even watched it by next season.
