Black★Rock Shooter (TV) : Episode 2

I will be honest, I do not get what is going on at all. This seems to be a show about an abusive relationship between friends. I’ve got that part, I think I have that part. What I do not understand is how the Black Rock Shooter stuff connects at all. It doesn’t seem to relate really at all, is she supposed to be like the meta-physical representation of the current conflict between the characters. I’d guess that is what it is, but I’m not really sure.
