Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night : Episode 7
Current Episode Score: 8
Skipping a music episode, and instead focusing purely on the characters and their future wishes and goals. With everyone largely planning to do as you would expect, of course except for Kano who just doesn’t know what to do. With a largely random goal in front of her of just gaining more followers for JELEE. But largely it feels like everything Kano did this episode was focused on making sure she could chase Yoru wherever she ended up. The motorcycle license was largely to let her travel to see Yoru when she goes off to school whenever she wants.
Now as for Kiui, this was an expected episode for me when it comes to her. I wasn’t expecting her goal to become a middle school teacher at all. Figured it would be related to video production, or v-tubing, or like future game/media creation. The normal generic things that you would expect a v-tuber to move towards that lets you use your audience to influence and boost your other projects. Something I’ve very much not sure about is Koharu, that relationship is completely out of left field for me. I wasn’t expecting her to become friends with somebody else who doesn’t fit in, and has gone to great extents to change herself. And I just don’t know where that is going at all. Are they eventually going to hook up in the future? Just don’t have any good bets on that front.
Now for the larger story coming from this episode, I’m shocked how fast things are moving. This isn’t a show that seems to be willing to spend the entire season just doing a short period of a year. They are talking about graduation soon and universities, and moving onto new things. Meanwhile I haven’t seen much drama being built that I was expecting with Kano’s mother. I figured that and the other idol group would be a major plot point, but outside of that one episode they are largely non-existent in the story. Maybe it will come up later, and the idea being Kano has already grown as a person enough that she really doesn’t care about any conflict with the group. Which honestly would be refreshing, if there is no major conflict and drama and instead things proceed as you would expect a normal high school year to go.
Side note here, I find it crazy the bike that Kano rented and learned to drive on. I was expecting to see a small scooter like you have in Laid-Back Camp. And instead you have Kano riding a full motorcycle, even if it isn’t a super powerful one. Just really breaking the idea of what would be happening there when I heard motorcycle license and high school. Also love she immediately got in trouble for letting Yoru ride on the back, really seems like very standard high school hi-jinks type stuff.
