RWBY: Ice Queendom : Episode 4

At this point, I really don’t know if I want to keep watching just based on the RWBY name or not. Cause honestly I don’t think this show is any good. The pacing is just horrendous, and the events we have occurring are not earned at all without the proper build up to them.

Take this episode, we have no introduction or explanation at all for this episode at all to start. They end the previous episode giving us the idea that the nightmare grimm in Weiss is still growing, and that it will be awhile till it is an issue. Which is great, and would have given us another episode or two of pure team building and the group being friends. Give us a slice of life episode or some silly interactions, something to show this group is actually friends. And that they could go into Weiss’s nightmare soon and fight the grimm. Because at the moment, if you don’t know anything about the original web animation, why would you assume this group are actually friends? We haven’t seen them joking or having fun together or just hanging out, nothing that would make us assume this group actually likes each other. Hell if anything we would assume the opposite.

But instead of growing the group as friends, and giving us time to expect them to be able to help Weiss. We are just getting what must have been a time-skip. Because now Weiss’s condition is much worse, and we just start off with Ruby in her nightmare trying to help Weiss. Except she randomly decides right when she meets Weiss that they are actually not friends, and that Weiss hates her, and just decides to figure out how to leave. I could have predicted this, based on us never seeing them being actual friends. I don’t know man, I just don’t know how this is the pacing and structure they decided to go with.

It almost feels like they have some event they must get to in order to finish the season, and they will cut and rush everything possible to reach that goal. But this is an anime original story, they have no restrictions on any of that. If your original goal was too large and couldn’t be done successfully, than change the original goal. But as it stands it just doesn’t work well at all.

Also this episode was another showing that Shaft just wasn’t the right studio for this anime at all I think. The fights just don’t have any impressive qualities at all. Nothing about the animation in them makes me want to go rewatch them in the future, unlike what the original web animation managed to do. I will say the music was decent this episode though.
