Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina : Episode 2
Current Episode Score : 7
And so episode 2 of the wandering witch, and it looks like they are going with the per-episode a new city or adventure method of doing things. And with this one we meet Saya, and a story that I don’t feel like I fully understand. Maybe the amount of time is the issue, or just a misunderstanding about magic in this universe. But it seems Saya was already fully capable of completing the test and becoming an apprentice. Like she can fly well, and apparently can use attack magic perfectly well. So what was the hold up keeping her from finishing the test and leaving the city to rejoin her sister. I kept expecting to learn the sister had passed away or something, but that wasn’t it. I’m just not sure, I enjoyed the episode and the character but the reasons the episode happened is a tad odd I guess.
The hotel scene is also a tad odd, it appears that she was turned away by all the hotels because they didn’t think she was a witch. And only the last hotel that happened to be Saya’s let her stay. But there is no way a massive city that would have a population majority dominated by novice or apprentice witches, many of which may just be passing through wouldn’t be able to find a place to stay the night. Like what happens to a wandering novice witch, do they just have to sleep on the streets? Or does Saya have more pull in the city than thought and told the other hotels to turn Elaina away, in which case who exactly is Saya.
Final thoughts for the episode is just the essence of magic in this universe. I’m always interested to see how a universe handles magic and it’s abilities, and apparently in this one it is incredibly overpowered. And I am very much hoping to learn about possible downsides or issues that would keep it from being so overpowered as it seems now. Because outside of the normal flying or manipulating elements for fire and water and such. They also have full time reversal spells that can effect both things and people to heal wounds or broken buildings. In which case what are the limits on that, could you win a fight by just reversing the age of the person you are fighting? Or if you chop down a tree and make a bench out of the wood, can you reverse the time on the tree location and cause it to regrow? I wait patiently for what makes this a system that would actually work in a functional universe.
