Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina : Episode 4
Current Episode Score: 6
Hmmm, this is another depressing episode following the previous one. And I don’t necessarily have any issues with depressing stories. But I don’t really know what lessons are being learned from them, or in what way Elaina is growing from the events she is encountering here. They just kinda feel depressing for the sake of making this a pretty shit world, and making sure the audience doesn’t think this is some magical and fantasy world that is nice. I just wonder to what benefit this is.
Than I have an issue with Mirarose, and I guess in general more just the role witches/mages and magic play in this world. Which I guess all stems from a lack of world building around magic. Thus far we know magic is pretty much omnipotent, as far as I can tell you can do anything with magic. From turning back time, to creating elements from nothing, to storing your broom in space, or cursing somebody to become a monster. So in what universe, would an all powerful magic user willingly let their lover be tortured only to get revenge afterwards? And why would somebody even think of making that person mad, capable magic users would be revered and feared just for what they are able to do, as far as I can tell they are the top of the theoretical food chain. Why would a person with god like abilities bow to the whims of a mere mortal king?
Is there some larger God who punishes magic users who go to far? Is there some technology we haven’t seen yet that outclasses magic? Because as far as I can tell, being a half decent magic user. Like even an apprentice mage, would put you vary far above non-magic users. And a full witch/mage would be a god like figure with god like abilities.
I really hope there is some good answer at this by the end of the show. I need to learn what the actual mechanics are that keep magic users from just taking over, outside of just there not being many of them. And just them being generally good people most of the time doesn’t really work, when we are following somebody who obviously feels self-important and doesn’t really do anything that isn’t to her own benefit. This is just a tough episode in general, and just throws open my doors of criticism completely.
